Singapore's Urban Sketchers

At Al Waldi Restaurant, I met a Singapore street sketcher. As she sketched the "putu piring" making kiosk and as I photographed it, we had a brief conversation. Just like in KL, there is now a growing community of street sketchers. It is a great way of documenting a cultural activity and heritage architectural subjects. They are also known as urban sketchers and its is usually done on location.

Only people I know into street sketching on my Fb are Lim Chin Han, Victor Chin and perhaps Merilyn PL Ng. Let me know if you are one.

Saturday Afternoon Painting Of The Village Grocer.

Melons and bananas liven up a drab corner. It was through this corner village grocer or mini market Lian Ho that I managed to trace the name of the street as Jalan Besar.

While I was satisfied with the original street view or documentary view, I felt I can turn it into art. It was the ragged wooden kiosk or cart that gave it so much character.

I ran the image through Smart Photo Editor's Photo Art Filter to make it painting or art like. This is for my painting, sketching and artist friends such as Lim Chin Han, Merilyn PL Ng and Johnny Ong Kki.

Half lit was a challenge for both the camera and me. See how ridiculously close the cars were parked.

Lithuanian street artist Ernest Zacharevic, who is well known for his wall murals and 3D installations in Penang, is credited with this weird 3D inatallation in Chinatown KL entitled Rage Against The Machine. I said weird because some of the painted children look like 'Matsallehs' (or Caucasians).

Although I have read about it previously, I was lucky to stumble upon the self-commissioned artwork by chance today. I had no idea of its exact location before this.

Also from last night, a sketch of the old-school coffee shop in Batu Road. The long-time kopitiam serves halal food.

Real-time sketching from the middle of a busy road can be dangerous. I used a sketch filter on the pic instead.

Nature's Art

The cats in the previous picture were looking at me looking up at this tree in the orchard. They must be thinking city people are strange people.

A couple of curious kids came and sat next to me on the grass littered with fallen leaves. Finally, one brave little girl asked: "Why are you looking at the leaves for so long?"

I wanted to explain: "I am looking at the seasons in the sun". Although trees are evergreen here, they do have their seasons where the leaves change colours and the branches bear fruits.
