Wooden Chick Is Not Your Frigid Or Unemotional Girlfriend - Part 2

An old chick in Parit Jawa

A Very Old Chick.

A wooden or bamboo chick I saw on the front of a camera shop in tiny Parit Jawa town, south of Muar. The advertisement for a Asahi Pentax Spotmatic camera reads like history. It dates it to between 1964 and 1976, leaving a clue about the longevity of the shop. The model was the then much aspired SLR 35mm film camera because of its compact design, Takumar lenses and TTL needle metering. Then, came the even smaller, analog Olympus OM-1.

Muar is, so far, is the top city in terms of domestic bookings at MyCen Hotels. The royal town of Johor is cozy, charming and has plenty of great food. Muar now has at least 3 new boutique hotels and many other hotels and homestay places. Find one here:

Batu Pahat is both a district and city in the state of Johor. It lies to the south of Muar, In its prosperous days in the past, the town was nicknamed “Little Paris of the East” as it was famous for its robust night life.

It is now more sedate but many hotels still exist. I called on local resident and my friend Dr Lowkp Pakar Sakit Puan, obstetrician and gynecologist (OB/GYN) at the New Putra Specialist Hospital in Batu Pahat to send me some pictures. https://www.facebook.com/obgy.lowkp on Fb.

Hometown Colours.

Rain falls on the parched road of tiny Sungai Mati town. The town of Dead River used to be a bustling river port. It was so named because it became an oxbow lake or billabong after breaking from the Muar River. Located on the outskirts of Muar town.

Time to introduce another local hotel. Muar has an exciting new boutique hotel in town. Muo Boutique Hotel is a new hotel that opened a few days ago. Tastefully refurbished from an old shop house, it appears classy, painted in white.

Mee Bandung Muar from Mak Tim

The Muar Mee Bandung at Warong Mak Tim was so authentic, it brought back memories of eating it at famous Abu Bakar Hanipah's in 70 year old Wah Sun kopitiam in Muar town.

The jolly mamak proprietor was such an intense PR guy he overwhelmed me and my Muar guide, the then local court interpreter Christine Yeow Cher Yuin. Believe me, as a court interpreter, cynical Christine has heard many tall tales and exaggerated claims. LOL.

Laksa Johor

Here is another view of Johore Laksa as served on the table at Warong Mak Tim. That is before we cleared the garnishing and lifted the noodles to uncover it for photography. See earlier pic and post titled Women's Day Treat.

As legend has it, the then Johor ruler, Sultan Abu Bakar, also the first Malay ruler to visit Europe in 1866, instructed his royal chefs to use spaghetti instead of the traditional rice noodles. The royal recipe caught on.
